Crisis in the Middle East: Cleaner Energy are Facing Enormous Challenges

On September 17, thousands of Hezbollah members' pagers in Lebanon exploded simultaneously, which killed nine and injured thousands. On the following day, the new explosions occurred again in Lebanon. Devices involved pagers, two-way radios, and wireless communication devices. Because of recent conflicts between Israel and Lebanon, Hezbollah condemned the incident as "Israeli aggression." According to the investigation, pagers were not the only target, with walkie-talkies, phones, fingerprint scanners, solar panels, and lithium-ion batteries also exploded.

Recent reports indicate that the batteries of certain pagers detonated remotely, though the exact cause remains unclear. This incident, which likes a scene from a science fiction movie, has shocked the world and raised concerns about the safety of electronic devices. Currently, small-scale conflicts are increasing in the world. Tensions are escalating between North and South Korea in East Asia; the Russia-Ukraine war has been ongoing for three years; and Israel is engaged in multiple conflicts in the Middle East. Since the new Israeli-Palestinian conflict started, the violence has intensified, and Israel leaders even declared that "Israel will fight until we achieve total victory."

These conflicts in the Middle East have had a significant impact on the daily lives of residents in the region. Like the Russia-Ukraine war, targeting power transformers and other electrical infrastructure has become a key strategy in modern warfare. Recently, some power stations in Lebanon were attacked by the Israeli military, and many transformers, batteries, and high-voltage power grids are damaged. Additionally, Iran has warned Israel that if Israel attacks Iran, they will target Israel’s energy infrastructure. With the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, there are legitimate concerns to worry that these conflicts will lead to a crisis in the development of clean energy in the region.

The Israeli government has approved new regulations requiring all new non-residential buildings and houses to install solar panels on their roofs. They also plan to deploy 3.5 GW of solar power by 2040. As one of the regions with the highest solar irradiation in the world, the Middle East and North Africa are an important area for developing clean energy. However, because of political instability and economic stagnation, it is quite frequent to have power outages in this region. Therefore, the adoption of clean energy generation not only solves the problem of power outages caused by poverty but also accelerates the process of achieving carbon neutrality. The countries of the Middle East are actively involved in the development of new energy projects, vigorously developing clean energy such as photovoltaic, hydrogen, and nuclear power. Countries with abundant oil resources are trying to explore the abundant sunlight resources to accelerate the decarbonization process of traditional energy enterprises. Egypt, Morocco, Iraq, Bahrain, and Libya have all set clean energy development targets to reduce their heavy dependence on oil.

If the crisis in the Middle East worsens, it is highly likely to lead to World War III. This outcome is not what we anticipated, as the current crisis has already impacted the economic markets of Western countries. The outbreak and escalation of conflicts have also heightened uncertainty in international energy markets. This crisis could result in Western countries imposing sanctions on Iran's oil exports, and Iran may block the vital oil transit chokepoint in the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, these conflicts are affecting the supply of natural gas. Israel, a key natural gas exporter, has suspended gas production in areas near the missile range of Gaza for security reasons. To avoid an energy shortage, more countries might consider developing clean energy alternatives.

Overall, the development of clean energy in the Middle East will bring both opportunities and challenges for new energy enterprises. For example, Israel and China have built a close relationship in new energy, electric vehicles, and power grids. It is reported that some Chinese automakers have suspended exports to Israel, but the projects in energy storage and renewable energy have not been affected. In addition, it is more significant to worry about the violence by Israel: invasion of the production and supply chain of core equipment. This means that any electronic device could be a potential danger. The explosion of the pagers in Lebanon has caused a global panic over electronic products. Due to China's peaceful political stance and its good reputation for manufacturing, many countries have begun to purchase electronic equipment from Chinese manufacturers. Therefore, this is an excellent opportunity for Chinese manufacturers to find their clients.
