In recent years, as global warming has accelerated at an "unprecedented" pace, the El Niño phenomenon reached its peak in 2023-2024. El Niño exacerbated extreme weather events, with global ocean temperatures hitting record highs. Moreover, El Niño caused increased heavy rainfall and droughts in many regions. In contrast, La Niña refers to the large-scale cooling in the central and eastern Pacific, accompanied by global climate chaos.
Due to the impact of global climate extremes, the growth of crops in cooler regions may be prolonged, and the crop yields may be reduced; in warmer regions, climate change may drive the spread of pest outbreaks. Thus, the climate crisis is a very important problem that humanity urgently needs to solve. However, a recent study suggests that because of the influence of the AMOC, the Earth might face an extreme cold climate in 2025.

AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) is one of the most important ocean circulation systems on Earth. AMOC brings warm and salty water from the subtropics of the North Atlantic to higher latitudes and then draws down heat and carbon to the deep ocean. This is one of the reasons that Western Europe is getting warmer. When the AMOC weakens, it will bring less warm water northwards, so Europe and the Northern Hemisphere will get cooler. A study in Nature Communications analyzed North Atlantic Ocean surface temperatures from 1870 to 2020, predicting that AMOC could collapse as early as 2025 and as late as 2095. The collapse of this system could trigger new crises. According to Professor Peter Ditlevsen of the University of Copenhagen, "The AMOC collapsed and restarted repeatedly in the cycle of ice ages that occurred from 115,000 to 12,000 years ago." The entire event lasted about 1,200 years, with global average temperatures dropping by about 6°C, ushering the Earth into an ice age.

After analyzing multiple data, researchers believe that global warming is the cause of AMOC instability. If AMOC shuts down, it will not only bring more cold climates, storms, and droughts but also lead to reduced food production, plunging humanity into a very challenging living environment. In April 2024, the United Nations Development Programme launched the "Climate Promise 2025," which aims to help governments worldwide develop temperature control plans. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that whether we can keep global warming within 1.5°C has reached a critical moment.
Whether the future climate turns warm or cool, there is no doubt that energy demand will increase in response to extreme temperatures. However, to slow down the collapse of AMOC and limit global warming, the most important thing is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. According to the World Energy Statistics Yearbook, despite global decarbonization, renewable energy generation reached a new record of 4,748 TWh in 2023, fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas still accounted for as much as 81% of global primary energy consumption. Therefore, there is still a long way to go in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and developing clean energy generation.

As winter marks a peak period for electricity consumption, residential heating will consume large amounts of electricity, and industrial energy consumption will also increase due to workshop heating and machine maintenance. Thus, using clean energy for power generation not only meets the growing demand for electricity but also reduces carbon emissions. In recent years, to achieve carbon neutrality, governments around the world have vigorously developed clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. Therefore, there remains a huge market for renewable energy generation. Additionally, energy storage technology has continuously improved with the development of electricity demand. To save electricity, more and more people and companies are choosing to install energy storage systems. Current energy storage technology can achieve intelligent storage and distribution of electricity, as well as stabilize grid voltage.
The development of modern grid technology is indispensable for the generation of clean energy and energy storage technology. Essential equipment for modern grid technology includes transformers. Today's transformers are becoming more intelligent and modular, able to intelligently regulate voltage, improve efficiency, and reduce maintenance.
